Petkovic: Our mentality won us the Coppa

The 49-year-old paid tribute to the work ethic of his players after their 1-0 win over Roma at Stadio Olimpico and is relishing the prospect of European football
Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic has praised his players for their attitude and hard work following their Coppa Italia victory over Roma on Sunday.

A solitary strike from Senad Lulic settled a tense and scrappy affair at Stadio Olimpico, and the 49-year-old feels the correct mentality and a slice of luck helped his side to edge the contest over their rivals.

“I am very satisfied for these guys who worked so hard this year and deserved the victory. It’s not easy to win a game like this and I’m sorry for Roma, but I am proud of my team,” he told RAI Sport after the match.

“Now we have Europe in front of us and the Supercoppa Italiana against Juventus.

“A bit of luck and the right mentality helped us to win this trophy. At the final whistle, after four minutes of stoppage-time, I finally knew we’d won. It was still in the balance right until the end as, with a long ball, anything can happen, but we held on.

“I have always tried to remain the same Petkovic I was before Lazio, with the correct humility and work ethic. Slowly, the results have arrived and I am happy the fans are enjoying this moment.

“We weren’t sharp towards the end of the season, but all our games were concentrated and it wasn't easy physically on the players, especially the ones who had international games.

“Now the crucial thing is to rest. After a few days we will all calm down and consider the transfer strategy.

“I am very happy for Lulic, as this is his second final and the first he has won. I dedicate the Coppa to all the families of the players and staff who put up with them being away from home for a long time. Now we celebrate.”
