Zanetti wants Inter push for Europe

The veteran defender says Sunday's victory can spark an upturn in fortunes for the club who now hope to draw a line under a poor season by qualifying for Europe
Inter captain Javier Zanetti has issued to a rallying call to his team-mates to make amends for a disappointing season by qualifying for European football.

The Nerazzurri moved ahead of Roma into the second and final Europa League spot following their 1-0 victory over Parma on Sunday, a result which brought an end to a run of three consecutive defeats for Andrea Stramaccioni's men.

Speaking to the club's official website, Zanetti says the club must now look ahead to ending the campaign on a high note after what has been an indifferent season for the Italian giants.

"We got back to winning at home again. These are three important points after a run of poor results. Considering the period we’ve been in we truly deserved this win," Zanetti said.

"We have five games left. They’ll be tough ones against teams that are fighting for salvation or Europe and we have our own goals as well.

"Now we want to put in a good week of work. We hope to get back some players and challenge our upcoming opponents, just as we’ve always done.

"But we’re on the right path. We have to make the most of this week in order to work hard and keep adding points in the standings, which could end up making a difference for us."

Following Sunday's victory, midfielder Jonathan highlighted the effect consistency can have on the team and promises to repay the faith afforded him by Stramaccioni.

"We all need a bit of consistency. It’s something that gives you confidence and the ability to do things without fear," added Jonathan.

"I’m happy and I thank the coach for the chances he’s given me, both today and against Roma. I hope to stay in form and play in the next game as well."

Inter resume their push to consolidate their Europa League spot with a visit to Palermo next Sunday.
