Juventus lack a real top striker, says Deschamps
The 44-year-old has highlighted the lack of a great striker as one of the Bianconeri's weaknesses as they aim for Champions League glory
France coach Didier Deschamps feels that the absence of a recognised top striker could hurt Juventus' chances in the Champions League this term. The Serie A champions have long been in the hunt for a world-class attacker, but chased players such as Edinson Cavani, Stevan Jovetic and Fernando Llorente - who will join on a Bosman move this summer - without success ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.
"All the great teams need a real top striker in order to win in Europe. My Juventus had attackers like [Gianluca] Vialli and [Alessandro] Del Piero, while strikers such as [Christian] Vieri and [Filippo] Inzaghi scored a lot as well," Deschamps told Tuttosport.
"Manchester United now have [Robin] van Persie, Real Madrid have Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bayern Munich have [Mario] Gomez and [Mario] Mandzukic. That's the situation at the big teams.
"These are attackers who can be decisive for the team. When the team is in trouble, they can make the difference and turn a scoreless draw into a 1-0 win."
Deschamps was part of the last Juventus squad that won the Champions League in 1996.
