Lippi: Juventus right to sign Anelka
The Champions League-winning coach insists that his old club have made the correct decision in swooping for the France international, despite the lack of enthusiasm in Turin
Marcelo Lippi has backed former club Juventus for completing a deal to sign French striker Nicolas Anelka.
The move for the 33-year-old has been met with criticism in Italy, with 76 per cent of readers polled by La Gazzetta dello Sport believing that the Turin giants have made an error in approaching the former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Chelsea frontman.
However Lippi, who won five Serie A titles and the 1996 Champions League while in charge at Juventus, feels the Bianconeri have completed a shrewd piece of business.
He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Juventus know what they need. I see that the fans are a little sceptical of him, but he has great class and perhaps just needs a new challenge.”
Lippi, currently coaching in China with Guangzhou Evergrande, reckons that Juventus' style of play has dictated their search for fresh attacking options.
“Juve play total football where fatigue is evenly distributed. The attackers are asked to press, to drop back and that sometimes doesn’t make them cool in front of goal. That’s why they have been searching for a new striker for some time.”
Anelka moved to Shanghai Shenhua from Chelsea in 2012, and has joined Juventus on loan until the end of the season.
