Mazzarri: I wanted to retire after Supercoppa loss against Juventus
The former Sampdoria boss has admitted that certain events have left him frustrated, and he could well say farewell to the game at the end of the season
Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri has hinted at retiring from football after the 2012-13 campaign, and added that he was already close to quitting after his side's controversial Supercoppa Italiana loss against Juventus earlier this season. The Partenopei had two players sent off in the 4-2 defeat after extra time, as well as having a penalty awarded against them, much to the frustration of both players and technical staff.
"Occasionally, I see and hear things that make me want to quit the game. I had a real desire to say farewell to football after the Supercoppa loss against Juve," Mazzarri stated to La Repubblica.
"There is a chance that I will retire at the end of this season, yes. However, I always try and take things one step at a time."
The 51-year-old then went on to stress that coaching one of Italy's traditional big clubs is not necessarily an objective for him.
"I don't have a feeling that I have to coach Inter, Milan or Juventus in order to say that I've made it.
"You obviously have a bigger chance of winning something at those clubs, but it's not all about winning trophies.
"Saving Reggina from relegation [in 2006-07] with so many deducted points meant more to me than winning something."
Mazzarri is under contract with Napoli until the summer of 2013.
