The experienced goalkeeper believes his young team-mate has a bright future ahead of him, while Mattia De Sciglio is determined to give his all to succeed
The 19-year-old netted once in Milan's 2-1 loss against Udinese at the weekend, before helping the Rossoneri to a 2-0 win over Cagliari on Wednesday with a double, and Abbiati feels there's much more to come from the Italy international.
"El Shaarawy has a lot of talent and time is on his side," Abbiati was quoted as saying on the official Milan website.
"He played a good game against Cagliari, but it is only the starting point of his career. He is not there just yet."
Meanwhile, defender Mattia De Sciglio has called on other young players like himself at Milan, to take on more of the weight of the challenge ahead this term following the departure of a number of experienced players.
He said: "This year we all have more responsibility and have to give more. El Shaarawy and I are here now. The young players are getting a chance, and we have to give our all when we get the opportunity to play."
De Sciglio, 19, has made three Serie A appearances so far this term.
