Ferrara will become new Sampdoria coach, says Abete
The former Juventus trainer is set to return to club management after he agreed to take the reigns of the Serie A side, two years after being sacked by the Bianconeri
Italy Under-21 coach Ciro Ferrara is poised to take charge of Sampdoria, Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete has revealed. The newly-promoted Serie A side have been looking at alternatives to Rafa Benitez, after the former Liverpool boss rejected the club's offer last week.
"Sampdoria president Riccardo Garrone contacted me to make an offer to Ciro Ferrara, unlike other club officials who have done the same thing behind our back," Abete told reporters.
"I spoke with Garrone and Ferrara, who expressed an interest in coaching Sampdoria in the next years.
"We gave the green light and now we must find a new coach for the Under-21 team."
Ferrara, who took charge of Italy's Under-21 team, will now return to Serie A coaching after previously guiding Juventus in the first few months of 2009-10, before receiving his marching orders.
The ex-Azzurri defender will take over from Giuseppe Iachini, who will be fired, despite guiding Sampdoria to back to the Italian top tier, as the club look for a more high-profile name at the helm.
