Gattuso: I decided to leave AC Milan after derby defeat to Inter
The combative midfielder does not feel he belongs to the team any longer and repeated his dream to return to Scottish club Rangers
Gennaro Gattuso has explained the reasons behind his decision to leave AC Milan. The 34-year-old announced last week that he will depart San Siro when his contract expires in June following a successful 13-year spell with the Rossoneri.Gattuso revealed that he no longer feels useful at Milan and added that he knew the end was near after the 4-2 defeat against Inter earlier in May.
"In the derby, I felt I was an ex-player," Gattuso told Sportitalia. "That night, I returned home and I decided to leave without talking to anyone.
"If I want to continue to play, I must leave this club."
The former Italy international also reiterated his desire to return to Rangers, where he played in 1997-98 before joining Salernitana.
"I have spoken with people who are interested in entering the club," he said.
"This is my dream, we will see. I am not interested in money. I want something that excites me and makes me feel alive."
The Scottish giants, who recently fell into administration, announced on Sunday they had reached a deal with former Sheffield United chief executive Charles Green for the 59-year-old to buy the club.
