Lazio’s Cristian Brocchi after victory over FC Zurich in Europa League: We can win silverware this season

The Italian is overjoyed to have scored the only goal against the Swiss club at home in Rome and is confident of a successful 2011-12 campaign with the Eagles

Lazio midfielder Cristian Brocchi believes that if he and his team-mates remain united, then they could win silverware this season.

Brocchi was speaking on Thursday following the Italian club’s 1-0 victory over FC Zurich in the Europa League Group D clash at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The win places Lazio third in the group with five points from four matches, level with second-placed Vaslui and four behind Sporting Lisbon, and maintains their hopes of qualifying for the round of 32.

Edy Reja’s side have made an impressive start to the Serie A campaign and are a point behind leaders Juventus after nine rounds of matches.

Given the Eagles’ positive start to 2011-12, Brocchi, who scored the winner against Zurich on 62 minutes, is of the belief that the team have the capability of winning silverware this term.

“The 4-3-3 formation we switched to in the second half and the introduction of Djibril Cisse and myself were the key tactical changes tonight {Thursday], without taking anything away from Miroslav Klose or Senad Lulic, who were the key performers in our [3-0 away] win against Cagliari on Sunday,” he told

“We have a lot of good players in this side and in certain situations, one is better than another, but we are a united squad and if we stay united we can win something this year.”

Reflecting on his winner against Zurich, the 35-year-old enthused: “I am happy because it is always nice to score a goal, especially when you don't do so very often.

“It is great to score a first European goal in the Lazio shirt, because I really wanted it. I scored one for Milan in the Champions League but it wasn't given – which was bad luck for me.

“But I am delighted to have scored such an important goal, and I dedicate it to my children, because a footballing career takes a lot away from them.”

In the other game in Group D on Thursday, Vaslui defeated Sporting 1-0 in Romania.
