According to a report in El Comercio, Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg are close to signing Peru international Juan Manuel Vargas from Serie A side Fiorentina for a fee in the region of €13 million.
The Europa League hopefuls are determined to strengthen their squad ahead of the start of the new league season and head coach Luciano Spalletti considers the 27-year-old Vargas to be the perfect addition to his roster.
Vargas has developed into a key player at Fiorentina since joining the Viola from Catania in the summer of 2008 and the left winger is continually being linked with a move away from his current club.
Fiorentina had initially set a €20 million asking price for Vargas, but the Italian side are now apparently ready to settle for a lower transfer fee.
Vargas is believed to be keen to move to Russia and the transfer could be a done deal by the end of the week.
Additionally, Zenit have released an official statement on their website to calm rumours that they were ready to raid Spartak Moscow for Brazilian pair Alex and Russian Premier League topscorer Welliton.
