Former Italy international and Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has voiced his concern about the future of the Azzurri ahead of their trip to Estonia on Friday in the first game of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

The 32-year-old, who won the World Cup in 2006 with Italy, retired at the end of the tournament in South Africa. Speaking to La Repubblica, Gattuso expressed his apprehension at the lack of talented young players coming through the pipeline.

“[Antonio] Cassano and [Mario] Balotelli aren't overvalued, but the essential thing is that they both put themselves at the service of the team and not the opposite. The problem is that you can count the amount of talented players in Italy on your finger: Balotelli, perhaps [Sebastian] Giovinco and Cassano is no longer 20 years old.

“They blame the foreigners, but there are other leagues who have many more foreigners than ours.”

However, the former Rangers midfielder remains convinced that Cesare Prandelli is the right man for the job.

“Prandelli's code of ethics is right. No group in any sector can go anywhere without rules. The first thing to do is gain the respect of the others.

“The national team doesn't lack a leader. [Andrea] Pirlo can drag people on the pitch and he is very good in the dressing room. And if a leader is someone who assumes responsibility, [Daniele] De Rossi is a born leader."
