The 25-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs throughout the summer transfer window but has remained in Florence and is now reported to be preparing to sign on until 2016.
The deal will include a bumper pay package for the midfielder and the club are hopeful of concluding the contract talks when he returns from international duty.
Montolivo signed for Fiorentina in 2005 from Atalanta and has gone on to become club captain after making 160 league appearances for the club.
