With Marcello Lippi’s era as coach of Italy coming to a close, forgotten star Antonio Cassano has sent a plea to Cesare Prandelli who will take charge of the Azzurri in the coming days.

“From the first day at Sampdoria the fans here in Genova fell in love with me,” he declared to GazzettadelloSport.

“I will always give my all for the shirt. I am sorry for what has happened in the past and with regards to Cesare Prandelli when we worked together at Roma.

“It was the same old story back then. I messed around constantly. I remember I got angry because he subbed me off in a friendly game. He had promised me the whole 90 minutes and I let him know how I felt as I left the field.

“Unfortunately three days later he had to leave the club after his wife was taken ill. At Roma he made me vice-captain despite the fact I was only 22. I only hope that Prandelli takes me into consideration like all the other players.

“I just want a level playing field, without looking at all the stupid things I have done in the past.”
