Roma 4-2 Udinese: Mirko Vucinic Hat-Trick Lifts Giallorossi Back Into Title Race
The Giallorossi returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion...
By Anthony Wright
A Mirko Vucinic hat-trick inspired Roma to a 4-2 victory over Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico. Luca Toni opened the scoring, while Antonio Di Natale grabbed a brace for the visitors.
Neither side was able to get their foot on the ball in the opening stages as possession changed hands too easily for either coach's liking. The Zebrette were the more ambitious side on the attack, with Alexis Sanchez looking for a killer ball early on, but the hosts' defence held firm.
Vucinic brought a good save from Samir Handanovic after 10 minutes as Roma looked to exploit the spaces within the visitors' midfield, but it was his strike partner who opened the scoring on the 15 minute mark.
Ricardo Faty brought down a long ball with ease on the left wing and played a hopeful cross in to Toni on the edge of the box, and the striker brought the ball down expertly on his chest before turning and firing a shot into the far corner.
Toni was combining well with Vucinic and the duo played a one-two moments later that allowed the Montenegrin to strike another long range shot that stung the palms of Handanovic. He wasn't to be denied, and in the 24th minute Jeremy Menez played an inch perfect pass for Vucinic to place a curled effort into the far corner.
It was not all one-way traffic, but Udinese were creating little with their possession while Roma's potency on the counter-attack was always a danger. 10 minutes before the break, however, Udinese were able to halve the deficit.
Antonio Di Natale cut the ball back for Paolo Sammardo as Udinese attacked down the right hand side, and when Matteo Brighi pulled the midfielder down the referee pointed to the spot. Di Natale stepped up himself and sent Julio Sergio the wrong way to score his 20th of the season.
The visitors had the wind in their sails and were pressing for the equaliser before the break, with 'Toto' striking a shot over from the edge of the box, but Roma ended the half in front.

Menez nearly gave Roma the lead just after the break as he breezed past Lukovic and cut into the area, but his right-footed effort fizzed just wide of the far post. Nicolas Burdisso then made a fine block on a close-range effort from Di Natale as both sides looked for the fourth goal.
Another cut-back from Sanchez created an opportunity for Sammarco to hit a side-footed effort towards goal but he didn't strike it cleanly and Roma were able to clear. The hosts looked to be tiring in defence as they scrambled the ball away increasingly frantically, and the inevitable equaliser came on the hour.
A free kick was whipped in from the right hand side and after John Arne Riise failed to clear the cross, Di Natale blasted home the loose ball from close range.
Five minutes later though, Roma were back in front when Mauricio Isla brought down Menez in the penalty area. Vucinic stepped up and blasted the penalty into the top corner to put the Giallorossi back in front.
Di Natale curled a free kick inches over the bar minutes later before Julio Sergio parried away Antonio Floro Flores' effort as the Zebrette re-took the initiative. The hosts were not about to sit back and won a series of corners, from which they could have extended their lead if Juan's header had not flown over the bar.
The victory was sealed in the last 10 minutes when Menez danced past Lukovic before firing a low ball across the six-yard box, which came out to Vucinic to pass into the far corner to complete his hat-trick. Menez was clearly enjoying himself as he pulled out all the tricks to send another dangerous ball into the six-yard box but it just evaded Toni and trickled past the far post.
Roma were able to see out the remaining minutes as Udinese's resistance ended, and they were able to celebrate returning to winning ways in style.
