After stepping up at 1-1 to bury a spectacular ‘chipped’ penalty to send Catania towards a precious victory over Inter, Sicilian hitman Giuseppe Mascara explained what went through his head in the seconds before the spot kick.

“In such moments I think you go with your instincts rather than your head,” he declared to SkySport.

“All I heard was the referee’s whistle and I stepped up to do what comes naturally.

“I never thought twice about attempting the chip, and was prepared to do so from the moment I picked up the ball.

“It is satisfying to score in such a manner, but my ultimate objective right now is sealing salvation with Catania.

“I have never scored in such a manner in a championship game, but I always try my hardest in training to perfect my technique,” concluded the hitman.
