Antonio Cassano is very much an integral part of Sampdoria's plans, with Luigi Del Neri stamping his seal of approval on his man.

Cassano, who played 21 minutes of Sampdoria's 2-1 win over Lazio on Sunday, has only just recovered from a groin problem.

But Del Neri insists the Italian is imperative to the Blucerchiati cause.

"I understand Cassano, and he understands me," he said as reported by Goal.com Italia.

"He knows what we want from him and we know what he needs from us.

"Also, I have never said that he was not a team player."

Sampdoria are back in the hunt for Europe, and they are just a point behind fifth-placed Juventus and three behind Palermo in fourth.

Del Neri has been linked with a contract extension by reports in Italy. His current deal expires in June.
