Cagliari Star Alessandro Matri Keeps Juventus Waiting

“I could turn them down like Riva did,” says the up-and-coming hitman.

Cagliari striker Alessandro Matri has insisted a summer move to Juventus is not a given if the Italian giants knock on his door.

The 25-year-old admitted earlier this week that he was flattered by reported interest from the Old Lady.

But he maintains he is fully committed to the Rossoblu and could take a leaf from club legend Gigi Riva’s book.

“He too turned them down…” Matri told L’Unione Sarda newspaper.

“I love it here. I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: I’d like to make history at this club. Cagliari are a big football dimension and whoever arrives here settles in.”

Matri has been at Cagliari since leaving Milan, with whom he spent much of his youth, in 2007 and has already netted 10 goals in Serie A so far this term to lift the Isolani into eighth in the standings, just four points behind the top four.

But Matri is not getting carried away and claims Serie A survival remains their top priority.

“It’s close,” he said. “We have to get to 40 points. Now we have 35, which is a lot and our morale is high.

“My reality is Cagliari for the time being. I want to stay here and get even better. We all have improved as a team and are now aware of our strength.”
