Antonio Di Natale scored twice in injury time to complete a stunning hat-trick as Udinese defeated Napoli 3-1 at the Stadio Friuli.
The game appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw after Christian Maggio, who was later red carded, had cancelled out Di Natale's rebound from a penalty. But, it was Di Natale who had the last laugh as he struck twice in stoppages to steal all three points.
Napoli had a great chance to tighten their grip on fourth place after Juventus drew at Livorno yesterday. The Partenopei were without the suspended Salvatore Aronica and injured Ezequiel Lavezzi, with former Bianconero Fabio Quagliarella leading the attack.
Udinese were minus the banned Cristian Zapata and Alexis Sanchez, and were hoping to boost their disappointing season thus far.
Napoli started fast and Marek Hamsik burst through from midfield and forced Samir Handanovic into a smart save low down to his right.
But, on six minutes Udinese were awarded a penalty as Kwadwo Asamoah was pulled down by Christian Maggio in the box. Antonio Di Natale saw his penalty saved by Morgan De Sanctis but was on hand to dispatch the rebound.
Udinese were dangerous on the break, and De Sanctis came to the rescue to smother from Di Natale again.
On 21 minutes, though, Napoli levelled the scores. Hamsik slipped through German Denis, and when the Argentine saw his shot pushed out by Handanovic, Maggio was on hand to fire the return through the goalkeeper's legs.
The game then ebbed and flowed. De Sanctis denied Gokhan Inler and Antonio Floro Flores, and Handanovic saved from the impressive Hamsik.
A minute before the break Napoli suffered a huge blow as villain-turned hero Maggio became the villain again. The wideman received his second yellow card for simulation in the area just moments after Fabio Quagliarella had headed against the bar.
Into the second half and Udinese had the first chance as Floro Flores raced through but dallied on the ball.
Asamoah, who had been tireless in midfield twice attempted shots from distance, with the second fizzing wide.
In truth, there were few chances in the second half, but Napoli almost won it with two minutes remaining as Michele Pazienza rattled the post with a thunderbolt from 20 yards.
Incredibly, it was Udinese who took home the three points as Di Natale scored his second in injury time. The ball was not cleared in the box, and the Italy man acrobatically volleyed the ball into the corner.
Napoli's heads dropped and Di Natale then completed his hat-trick even deeper into stoppage time. The little attacker was allowed a clean run at De Sanctis, and he slid home with aplomb.
