Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu is said to be devastated after failing a fresh drugs test yesterday.
The 31-year-old tested positive for anorectic substance sibutramine following the Serie A match against Bari on January 10.
Mutu was sacked by English side Chelsea in 2004 after receiving a seven-month ban for taking cocaine and now risks being handed a hefty ban of up to four years which would effectively end his career.
The former Juventus man was reportedly shocked when notified by team manager Roberto Ripa and head doctor Paolo Manetti and immediately abandoned the Viola’s training session.
He has refused to comment on the incident so far, but vented his frustration last night after having dinner with the rest of the Gigliati squad.
“I did nothing wrong,” he is quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.
Fiorentina have insisted they will stand by Mutu who is expected to file an appeal over the coming days.
