Atalanta 3-0 Lazio: Doni Double Downs Aquile
The Orobici put their recent troubles behind them with a resounding victory over fellow strugglers Lazio…
By Stefano Federici
A resurgent Lazio side were looking to break their taboo in Bergamo as they took on a struggling Atalanta outfit.
The Orobici started positively and found themselves two goals up after just nine minutes when captain Cristiano Doni twice lost his marker to punish the visitors inside the box. Despite having made a modest attempt to bounce back Lazio were once again made to pay for suspect defending when Simone Padoin gifted Atalanta a third just before the break.
Despite attempting to bounce back after the re-start, Davide Ballardini's side lacked ideas and were forced to go home with nothing to show, after a disastrous day at the office.
The game started brightly and the Nerazzurri almost found the net after just 60 seconds when Doni shaved an effort just over the bar following a quick break forward.
Atalanta had taken the early initiative and they continued to threaten Fernando Muslera’s goal as Lazio failed to clear their lines and take a hold on possession.
It took the Orobici just five minutes to break the deadlock and they did so when Doni nodded home a free kick inside the box. The Atalanta captain appeared to have pushed down Guglielmo Stendardo as he neared the ball, but the incident went unsighted by the referee and the goal was left to stand.
Three minutes later the home side doubled their lead in spectacular fashion when Doni drilled home a wonderful lay off from Tiribocchi eight yards from goal. The visitors were stunned following the Orobici’s lighting start and Ballardini’s men were looking lost for sorts at the back.
Lazio’s first real chance of the game came on 25 minutes when Roberto Baronio cut inside the box and nested a decent effort just wide of the far post. The Biancocelesti appeared to be finding their feet, but were still losing the battle in the middle of the park.
On 32 minutes Ferdinando Coppola was finally called into action between the sticks when Floccari headed on a free kick in the path of the bottom corner.
Two minutes later however Atalanta increased their lead when Padoin curled a wonderful ball past Muslera, to send the home crowd into frenzy behind the goal. Lazio were once again left to rue some suspect marking and could have no complaints after a disastrous opening 45 minutes.

The Orobici started to run out of gas as the match neared the hour mark, and this was testament to how hard the Bortolo Mutti’s side had worked to take a stronghold on the game in the opening period.
As Lazio struggled to test Coppola between the posts, the visitors became ever more desperate to shoot from range. On 62 minutes Zarate attempted a drive from way out, but his effort lacked precision and sailed over the bar.
Shortly after Sergio Floccari went close as he looked to snatch on a poor back pass and round an advancing Coppola inside the box. Unfortunately the former Nerazzurri hitman took a touch too many and he was dispossessed by the ‘keeper.
With the clock ticking down Ballardini’s side began to look more and more clueless. It was proving to be a massive step back from recent weeks where the Aquile had started to look like the worst was behind them.
In the dying minutes Atalanta closed the game out in attack and saw out a well deserved victory. Lazio left the field looking extremely dejected after their taboo in Bergamo continued, leaving them right in the thick of things at the wrong end of the standings.
