Atalanta 0-2 Napoli

Napoli continued their good run of form under Walter Mazzarri as they defeated relegation candidates Atalanta 2-0 away from home. Fabio Quagliarella scored the first goal of the match as early as the seventh minute when he controlled a Salvatore Aronica pass to shoot with his right foot from outside the Atalanta penalty area into the top right corner of the net. The Neapolitans wrapped up all three points two minutes before the hour mark when Michele Pazienza scored.

Bari 2-0 Udinese

Bari carried on with their impressive Serie A form as they defeated Udinese 2-0 at home. A sixth minute goal from Riccardo Meggiorini saw Bari start the New Year with a bang. The victory was assured in the 68th minute when Paulo Vito Barreto netted the ball.

Catania 1-0 Bologna

Catania won the relegation six-pointer against Bologna as they defeated them 1-0 at home. Nicolas Spolli scored the only goal of the match nine minutes from time.

Siena 1-5 Fiorentina

Champions League hopefuls Fiorentina commenced 2010 with a resounding victory over Siena in the Tuscan derby. They had virtually wrapped up the match in the first half itself when they went 3-0 up. Per Kroldrup gave the Viola the lead five minutes into the match and then in the 28th minute it became 2-0 when Mario Santana scored. Eight minutes later it was 3-0 to the Florence-based side as Alberto Gilardino scored.

The visitors continued to torment Siena in the second half. Gilardino netted his second of the match in the 66th minute and then 11 minutes from time Adrian Mutu scored Fiorentina's fifth of the afternoon. However, the hosts earned themselves a consolation goal when Massimo Maccarone converted a penalty in the 84th minute.

After the match, I took to Facebook and Twitter again to get some fan reaction. Lets take a look at what our readers have to say:

Joel Peeperkoorn feels that Arsenal should rest their big guns in the second leg, saying: “There's no way we can beat Milan by five goals."

Jez Cook, however, takes a different perspective, singing himself back to positivity: “FIVE FOUR we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four ....FIVE FOUR we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four we're gunna win five four ...FIVE FOUR - just keep repeating it.”

Well, you have to admire his fighting spirit...

Incidentally, no team has ever progressed in Europe after losing the first leg by such a heavy deficit.
