Fiorentina director Pantaleo Corvino has defended Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo from the barrage of criticism that has been levelled towards him this term.

The €25 million summer signing has failed to reach top form at Vinovo, sparking a negative reaction from detractors. Corvino, who lured Melo away from Almeria in 2008, claims those who have pointed fingers of blame at the Brazilian are wrong in doing so.

"Those who say Melo is a flop are making a huge mistake," Corvino told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

"Those who think he is a play-maker are also making a mistake and they are damaging the player. By taking Diego and playing with two strikers Juventus did not want to buy a play-maker."

Corvino also shared his views on Luca Toni after the ex-Viola hitman left Bayern Munich to join Roma.

"Luca will be an added value to Roma, he has shown everyone what he can do and he will have big motivations," he concluded.
