The head of Italian referees, Pierluigi Collina, has gone against FIFA president Sepp Blatter's resistance to calls for video technology in football.

The Italian has lobbied for the use of technology, talking of the benefits he feels it would bring to the sport. He feels the lack of video replays means the whistle blowers are used as scapegoats when things go wrong, often being made to carry the burden of a player who dives or cheats - something that could be avoided if the rules over technology change.

"We cannot continue like this. Referees get on to the pitch knowing that games will be dissected to find errors that they have committed," Collina told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

"I don't think it's right for them to accept all this. At this point, would it not be right to use technology? Otherwise the referree will be the only one to make decisions with his eyes, while the others use more perfect instruments.

"[UEFA] president [Michel] Platini is right when he said traditional refereeing was dead. We must find a solution to reduce the gap which has now become enormous."
