After being eliminated from the Champions League, Juventus have reportedly stepped up their interest in Valencia star Juan Mata, according to the Spanish newspaper Sport.

The Bianconeri's group stage exit in Europe's top club competition has signalled the need for reinforcements, especially in the attacking third of the field.

Coach Ciro Ferrara has been unable to settle on a tandem upfront, due to the inconsistencies of Alessandro Del Piero, Amauri and David Trezeguet. Meanwhile Diego has often been disappointing since his move from Werder Bremen.

The Spanish forward has impressed since moving to Los Che in 2007. He has four goals and two assists in 12 appearances in La Liga this season and has become a regular call-up for the Spanish national team.

The 21-year-old is likely to command a hefty transfer fee, above €20 million, as the Spaniards seem reluctant to sell. German giants Bayern Munich are also thought to be interested in his services.
