Report: Roma Defender Philippe Mexes A Major Doubt For Sampdoria Trip

The injured Frenchman is unlikely to travel to Liguria next weekend…

Roma boss Claudio Ranieri might have to do without centre-back Philippe Mexes when the Giallorossi pay visit to fellow Champions League hopefuls Sampdoria in Serie A next Sunday, according to Il Tempo newspaper.

The 27-year-old suffered a medial collateral strain in his right knee during the Rome derby win over Lazio and will undergo scans tomorrow when the Lupi resume training at Trigoria after a two-day rest.

The injury is reportedly not as serious as first thought, but huge question marks hang over his availability for the visit to Marassi.

Should the former Auxerre man be ruled out, Argentine Nicolas Burdisso is expected to partner Brazilian international Juan in the heart of defence with derby hero Marco Cassetti stepping in at right-back.

Rodrigo Taddei and Matteo Brighi should deputise for suspended duo Jeremy Menez and David Pizarro.
