Lazio 0–0 Bologna: Toothless Aquile Held By Rossoblu

The Biancocelesti’s winless run stretched to over three months...

Lazio were desperately searching for their first Serie A victory in three months as they hosted fellow strugglers Bologna to the Stadio Olimpico.

The Biancocelesti took the early initiative and had the best chance of the opening period when Mauro Zarate produced a brilliant solo run, only to shoot direct at Emiliano Viviano.

Lazio continued to dominate possession for much of the second half but as their legs started to tire Bologna looked increasingly secure at the back. As the Aquile strikers once again failed to come up with the goods, the Biancocelesti were forced to settle for a point on their 12th game without a victory.

The game started tensely, but the home side looked the more threatening as Tommaso Rocchi headed over from six yards after an inviting cross from Francelino Matuzalem.

Lazio should have taken the lead on six minutes when Matuzalem found himself free inside the box following a clever cut-back from captain Rocchi. The Brazilian took the shot in his stride but could only blast into the legs of Emiliano Viviano.

Five minutes later it was Mauro Zarate who gave the visitors a scare when he skipped past three defenders and smashed a shot goalbound from 12 yards. Fortunately for the Felsinei, the Aquile hitman was a little off balance as he connected with the ball and his effort was steered wide by a well placed Viviano.

On 18 minutes Bologna had their first real opening when Marco Di Vaio rounded Fernando Muslera in the box. The former Lazio youth product looked to find an angle from which to shoot, but his effort finished wide of the post to the delight of the Uruguayan glovesman.

Roberto Baronio tried his luck on the half hour mark as blasted a long range free kick straight on goal. The Rossoblu ‘keeper remained rooted to the spot however, as he calmly watched the effort go soaring over the bar.

Just before the break Roberto Guana produced a blistering run down the middle to catch Lazio off guard on the counter. The midfielder then served Marcelo Zalayeta with a great cross to the far post, but the former Napoli hitman wasted his chance as he smashed a shot high and wide.

Di Vaio Should Have Scored After Rounding Muslera

After the re-start Lazio once again took command. Pasquale Foggia immediately looked to make a nuisance of himself, and he dribbled down the right flank at pace to win an early free kick not far from the edge of the box. The home side failed to capitalise however, and Matuzalem looked to cross the free kick when a shot would have certainly given Viviano more to think about.

On 52 minutes the Biancocelesti were extremely unlucky not to go ahead when Foggia finished off a fine attacking move with a shot just inches wide. The Neapolitan winger had taken Kolarov’s cross down well on the edge of the box, but he couldn’t bury the finish with a tricky half volley.

As the game neared the hour mark, the home side started to look increasingly frustrated as they started to become pushed further and further back by the organised Felsinei midfield.

On 70 minutes, Viviano was once again called into action as he stabbed clear a powerful shot from Kolarov. The Serbian had found himself behind enemy lines following a wonderful threaded pass from Zarate, but with little support in the middle he was forced to drive low and hard at the near post.

In the closing stages the side’s became increasingly camped in one half of the field. With Lazio throwing everything forward in search of a winner, Bologna responded by bringing men back in numbers.
