Roma coach Claudio Ranieri has allayed fears that Daniele De Rossi will be rushed back into action against Atalanta, explaining that he will keep him in reserve on Sunday.

De Rossi was recovering from a broken cheekbone when he was admitted to hospital for renal colic, and the coach insists that he is not in the right condition to return to the first team.

"In these past weeks, Daniele has lost seven kilos and has been out for many days - it's better not to suddenly force him," he reasoned to Rai Sport.

"He will return gradually - he will probably play for a half against Basel next Thursday, then we'll see."

With De Rossi remaining on the sidelines, it is likely that Matteo Brighi will take his place in a central midfield role alongside David Pizarro.

The Giallorossi will be looking to avenge last season's 3-0 reverse when they come up against the Orobici at 15:00 CET tomorrow.
