thumbnail Hello,

The hitman was ecstatic that his side defeated Lyon and qualified for the next stage of the Champions League...

The smile could not be wiped off Fiorentina forward Alberto Gilardino, as the Viola qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League after defeating Lyon 1-0 on matchday 5.

A Juan Vargas penalty secured the Gigliati's passage through to the next phase of the competition, as well as giving them top spot with one match to go.

"We are very happy for this victory because it allows us to go through to the next stage," 'Gila' told Sky post-match as reported on Firenzeviola.it. "It is an historic moment for us.

"I think we fully deserved the win, even if at the end, we suffered.

"In the first half, we were absolutely perfect, and will now soak up the spoils that come our way."

The Italian international also expressed some positive words about the goalscorer, saying that he has an important role in the team.

"He is exceptional," Gilardino stated. "I think he is the best crosser that I have ever had.

"He has grand qualities, and is demonstrating to be a remarkable player.

"He can become a valuable player for this team," he concluded.

Fiorentina sit on 12 points from five matches.
