Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio was all smiles on Sunday after producing a string of fine saves to help the Giallorossi defeat Bari 3-1 at the Olimpico.

“I am really pleased to be aiding the team and be playing more often,” the 31-year-old said to Sky Sport Italia.

“I appreciate the compliments, but I must keep working hard to remain first choice.”

Julio Sergio arrived in the Eternal City in 2006 and has been a third choice at the Olimpico since.

Former Lupi boss Luciano Spalletti used to say that Julio Sergio was the best third goalkeeper in the world. Compatriot Doni will now struggle to reclaim his place between the sticks.

“I take things one day at a time,” insisted Julio Sergio.

“I am happy with my performance against Bari and every game is an opportunity for me.

“I have always believed in myself and I never gave up. I am settled here in Rome. I have the utmost respect for Doni and everyone gets their chances in football.

“Perhaps he will soon get back into the starting XI…”
