Fourth-placed Fiorentina hosted sixth-placed Parma at the Artemio Franchi stadium tonight hoping to catch second-placed Juventus.

The first chance came after only four minutes for Parma, as former Fiorentina striker Valeri Bojinov fired the ball just wide of the post after dribbling past Dario Dainelli.

Fiorentina responded four minutes later, when a long pass found Marco Marchionni in the area, but the former Parma midfielder didn’t find the right timing to shoot.

A big chance for the Emiliani came in the 14th minute, when Cristiano Zanetti came up with a great clearance to stop Blerim Dzemaili’s shot from inside the area.

The visitors continued to attack without fear and in the 20th minute Nicola Amoruso hit the post with a shot on a pass by Dzemaili, but the flag had already been raised for offside.

Five minutes later, Marchionni had another chance as he controlled a pass by Alberto Gilardino and tried a lob over goalkeeper Antonio Mirante, who kept the ball out with a great save.

The next minute, Fiorentina took the lead through Gilardino, who headed in a nice cross by Juan Vargas to make it 1-0 to the Viola.

It was somewhat against the run of play, and Parma found an equaliser just four minutes later, as Dzemaili played a great pass for Cristian Zaccardo, who reached the byline and played it in for Amoruso in the area, and the former Juventus striker made it 1-1 with an easy touch from close range.

The home side reacted and in the 36th minute a cross from the left by Vargas was dangerously deflected toward the near post, but Mirante was able to anticipate Gilardino before he could turn it in. That was the last chance of the first half.

No changes were made by either coach during half time. Just seven minutes in, Parma surprisingly took the lead, as Daniele Galloppa's ball into the area was turned in with a volley by Bojinov.

In the 56th minute, Vargas fired a great left-footed shot from the edge of the area that went just wide, as Fiorentina tried to react after going behind.

Six minutes alter, the Viola did find an equaliser, again through Gilardino, who headed the ball in superbly on a corner kick to make it 2-2.

After this the home side's attacks became more convinced, and in the 65th minute substitute Jose Castillo tried a diving header on a cross from the left by Vargas which he sent over the bar.

Two minutes later, however, the visitors took the lead again, as Christian Panucci's long ball found substitute Davide Lanzafame in space, and the striker made a run towards goal before coolly beating goalkeeper Sebastien Frey to make it 3-2.

It was an exciting match at the Stadio Franchi, as both sides attacked without fear. In the 77th minute, Castillo had a chance to make it 3-3 after Mirante failed to control a cross from the right by Lorenzo De Silvestri, but his shot from close range went wide.

Fiorentina struggled to react after that, and three minutes before the end, midfielder Marco Donadel was given a second yellow card for a bad foul on Stefano Morrone.

In injury time, it was Parma who had the ball in the net again, but Dzemaili was judged to be in an offside position when Lanzafame's pass was sent in.

There was one final chance for Fiorentina in the 95th minute, but Mirante made a brilliant save to keep out a header by Gilardino.

This amazing 3-2 victory allows Parma to jump to third place in the standings with 23 points. Meanwhile, the Viola are fifth with 21 points.
