Fiorentina Star Riccardo Montolivo Holds Back Italy Target Cesare Prandelli
Montolivo has insisted the tactician wants to lead the Viola to success before taking the reins of the national team.
Fiorentina midfield ace Riccardo Montolivo is adamant coach Cesare Prandelli will not turn his back on the Gigliati when Italy boss Marcello Lippi leaves his post, which is expected to be after the World Cup.
Italian press reports are suggesting that Prandelli is the hot favourite to succeed Lippi on the world champions’ bench, but Montolivo says the 52-year-old has a mission to accomplish in Tuscany.
“I think that he wants to win in Florence before doing so with the national side,” Montolivo told La Gazzetta dello Sport after Wednesday night’s friendly international between Italy and Sweden.
The Azzurri claimed a 1-0 win courtesy of a Giorgio Chiellini header, and Montolivo made a rare starting appearance that he hopes will serve to bolster his World Cup case. He also said that playing with the Viola in Europe will make a difference.
“Playing in the Champions League could convince Lippi to take me to the World Cup. If I do well I could reap the benefits,” concluded the former Atalanta star.
