Cagliari president Massimo Cellino has launched a stinging attack on Italy boss Marcello Lippi over his decision to allow some members of the Nazionale squad to return to their respective clubs early.

Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Pirlo and Gianluca Zambrotta were all released after Saturday’s clash with Holland, and the Milan duo will line up against Cagliari next weekend.

“Why do Cagliari have to make do without two key players for over a week whilst Milan are privileged and can prepare for Sunday’s match with all of their top players?” the outspoken Cellino roared in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Cagliari duo Federico Marchetti and Davide Biondini are still training with the Azzurri and are expected to play a part against Sweden on Wednesday night.

“It is not a level field to begin with, but if we throw in this type of advantage...” he continued.

“I like Lippi, but he bowed to compromise in this case. Here we go again with the bias towards the usual suspects.

“They should go ahead and set up a Super League, so everything is more explicit. The little clubs are still overwhelmed by the financial strength of the big sides. And there is no equality in the national side either!”
