Ireland Boss Giovanni Trapattoni Thinks Positive Ahead Of France Clash
The Italian has insisted his team has no fear of their illustrious opponents and even had time to cast an eye over the Serie A title race...
“France are strong and have important sponsors behind them, but I am not scared,” he told the La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“When I was a footballer, I faced Pele without fear. I was reckless and courageous. And that’s how I want my Ireland to play.
“Football is not science. It’s not mathematics. It’s not enough to be the strongest team to win.
“We must think positive. We were undefeated in the qualifying stage. We drew twice with Italy. And if we kept the Azzurri at bay…" he pondered.
“Do you want to know what my motto is for this tie? We are not famous, but we’re warriors.”
Trap then turned his attention to events back home. Reigning champions Inter have a five-point lead at the top of Serie A, but Juventus and Milan are back on track after a troubled start.
“I think that only Inter can help their rivals back into the title race,” said Trapattoni.
“They have quickly forgotten about [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic and they will also have a starring role in Europe.”
