Genoa star Raffaele Palladino has been named in Marcello Lippi’s Italy squad for the upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Sweden, and he is relishing the chance of turning out in the iconic Azzurri shirt.

The 25-year-old received the news after netting a goal in Genoa’s 4-2 home win over Siena. He seemed a little surprised as he has recently returned to action after a lengthy lay-off due to an intestinal virus.

“When I made my comeback at Chievo, I didn’t think I would manage to get to this level so quickly,” he is quoted as saying in Il Secolo XIX.

“I thought I’d need at least a couple of months. If I did it earlier, a lot of credit must go to our fitness coach, [Alessandro] Pilati.

“Getting back into the national team is a dream come true. And I want to dedicate this achievement to the fans, who have always supported me, to the club and in particular to Pilati, who has always been close to me over these past few months.”

Genoa have now moved into sixth place in Serie A, one point adrift of city rivals Sampdoria.

“Twenty points is a lot,” he mused. “I have been saying all along that this team are strong and can still improve.

“I think we have what it takes to achieve important targets come the end of the season.”
