Mario Beretta has dismissed speculation that he could be installed as Lazio's next coach.

Press reports in Italy claim that Aquile president Claudio Lotito is set to swing the axe on coach Davide Ballardini after Thursday night’s debacle at Villarreal in the Europa League.

The Biancocelesti succumbed 4-1 to the Spanish outfit and are languishing in 15th place in Serie A, failing to get a single win since August 30.

Several names have been associated with the Stadio Olimpico hot-seat over the past few days. Beretta, who has been unemployed since being sacked by Lecce last March, is among them. However, the 50-year-old has moved to stop the rumour mill.

He told Calciomercato.it, “I have already said it and I won’t change my mind: it is certainly an honour to be linked with Lazio.

“But I have not had any contact with the Biancocelesti directors. There is nothing.”

Former Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic is also said to be among the potential candidates to take over. The former midfielder played for Lazio from 1998-2004 and was a crucial member of the side who claimed the Serie A title in 2000.
