Bologna president Francesca Menarini is confident that new signing Stephen Appiah will become a key player for the club.

The former Juventus, Fenerbahce and Parma star was signed as a free agent. The Ghanaian was previously released by the Turkish side in June 2008, but continued to feature for the Ghana national team, despite the recurrence of a long-term knee injury.

"The arrival of Stephen Appiah is a decision that was shared by all the leaders of the Rossoblu," Menarini told Datasport on Monday.

"We all know the value of this player. [He] is eager to revive himself with a club after a serious injury.

"We thought long and hard. The thorough medical checks performed have provided the necessary assurances - Appiah is intact and available."

Menarini further explained that the player was acquired partly due to the loss of another member of the squad.

"Appiah will make a significant contribution in a department that, because of the long-term absence of [Massimo] Mutarelli, was depleted," she concluded.

Bologna are involved in the relegation race, with just nine points from 11 Serie A matches this season.
