Palermo Taste Defeat

Palermo were flying high in the domestic league, courtesy of an impressive five-match unbeaten streak that included victories over Juventus, Livorno and Udinese. Morale was sky high in the Rosanero camp ahead of the Inter clash on Thursday evening but their hopes of extending their winning streak were dashed early on against the defending champs who jumped into a 4-0 first half lead.

Walter Zenga’s men put together a courageous second half performance, clawing back three goals in the first 17 minutes, but it wasn’t enough as they eventually fell 5-3.

Zenga said he was disappointed with the loss but was pleased with his side’s second half showing.

“Unfortunately, in 10 minutes we conceded three goals, and that can happen when you play against a team like Inter,” Zenga stated.

“We did really well to get ourselves back into the game though, and we played with great desire, which I was pleased with.”

Palermo must shake off the defeat to Inter and focus on Genoa who will be paying a visit to the Renzo Barbera on Sunday evening in a battle between two teams who harbour legitimate European ambitions.

Genoa Snap Losing Streak

After losing three straight matches in all competitions and giving up a whopping 11 goals during that span, Genoa finally got on the right track again with a much needed victory over Fiorentina on Wednesday evening.

That win not only stopped the Grifoni’s recent slide but helped them to leapfrog the Viola into sixth place. Giandomenico Mesto was the hero on the evening as he scored the winning goal that sewed up three important points for Genoa. The 27-year-old was relieved that the Grifoni were able to snap their losing streak and hopes that the team can now march onwards and upwards.

“It was a match that we wanted to win at all costs, so we are very happy to do exactly that,” Mesto said.

“We have had a few problems recently, but that is a normal thing for any squad. Hopefully this is now behind us, and we can move on.”

Genoa will now look to make it two wins on the trot as they travel to Sicily on Sunday evening to face a tenacious Palermo side who have European dreams of their own.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo)

Sergio Floccari (Genoa)

The Calabrese hitman was one of the Grifoni’s high profile summer signings and has already found the back of the net three times in just six appearances. The 26-year-old will look to add to his tally on Sunday evening against Palermo.

PREDICTION

Palermo will shake off their disappointing loss to Inter with a slim victory over a Genoa side that have lacked consistency this season.
