Sampdoria director Giuseppe Marotta claims Juventus were on the cusp of signing star striker Antonio Cassano in the summer.

Cassano will play against the Old Lady later tonight, but it could have been so different as Marotta explains.

"How close was he to Juventus in the summer? He was close enough," Marotta told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

"Juventus, like other clubs, had laid their eyes on him, but there was never a real deal."

The Italian chief insists the Bari-born man will not be leaving next year, despite a reported interest from Inter.

"There are little chances he will move next year. He has shown great love for Sampdoria, and we want to keep him," added Marotta.

"His partnership with [Giampiero] Pazzini is perfect and the parallels with [Gianluca] Vialli, and [Roberto] Mancini are there to see."
