Police in Palermo have opened an investigation after two robbers forced Fabrizio Miccoli's family to hand over cash and valuables inside the striker's home while he was playing against Udinese.

According to Eurosport.it, the thieves forced Miccoli's wife to hand over €2,000 in cash and a diamond ring worth €20,000. All this occurred in front of the player's children, father-in-law and friends, who were watching the game on TV.

The report claims the thieves climbed up to the city-centre apartment via scaffolding and burst in through an open window.

Neither of the men were armed and they were not wearing any balaclavas. After the robbery, the men escaped with two other characters who were waiting outside the building.

The police are now investigating to see if this was just a robbery or whether there were other underlying motives behind it.

This is not the first time a player has been targeted by criminals in Italy. Earlier this year, Napoli's Marek Hamsik and Inter midfielder Sulley Muntari were both victims of crime.
