AC Milan Full-Back Gianluca Zambrotta Hails 'Important' Victory Over Roma
Milan full-back Gianluca Zambrotta talked about the importance of last night's 2-1 victory against Roma.
Yesterday AC Milan won their first Serie A match in almost a month at home against Roma, coming back from behind to win 2-1. It was a very important victory for the Rossoneri's morale as well as for their position in the league, as confirmed by full-back Gianluca Zambrotta.
"It was a very important win because at the end of the first half we were three points above the relegation zone, while now we're three points away from the Champions League spots," he said to Sky Sport 24.
"I think it was a fundamental victory, we've managed to come out of a very difficult period. We conceded a goal after less than five minutes, it was complicated and in the first half we didn't play well, they certainly did better. Then, in the second half we controlled the match better and created more opportunities."
On Ronaldinho's position on the left side of the attack, Zambrotta said, "When I arrived at Barcelona, he already played wide on the left, with [Samuel] Eto'o in the middle and [Lionel] Messi on the other side. I don't think it's new for him to play there and I think he can make the difference in that position. I hope he can continue like this."
Recently much of the criticism aimed at Milan focused on the full-backs, which the Italian international thinks is unfair.
"The criticism bothered us, because it seemed as if we were the only ones to blame for the team's less than positive moment," he continued. "Certainly there were some problems, but it's normal when you play so often. In moments like these, you always try to look for what works instead of what doesn't. I'm used to this, but in football very often there's a lack of objectivity."
Finally, on their next Champions League opponents Real Madrid, he said, "They're a great team with great champions, although they leave a lot of space and give away many chances. We'll have to do well to get into the spaces they leave behind."

Here's the thoughts of Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, who felt his side deserved a point from the game.
"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.
"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.
"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

“The score made it look like it was an easy game, but it certainly wasn't.
(Strange... it looked pretty easy from where I was sitting, but hey.)
“I do not think it's over yet. I remember a clash between Milan and Deportivo la Coruna when Milan was also ahead by four goals, and in the end Deportivo eliminated Milan.
“I went into the Arsenal dressing room after the match to speak to Robin van Persie. I had agreed with him to swap shirts – my sons are big fans of his and he brought two for them. They will be delighted.
Van Bommel went on to talk about a possible move to PSV in the future, but was quick to point out his terms for the move.
“I've spoken with PSV, but we don't have an agreement yet. The club has to decide what they want.
“If Louis van Gaal turns out to be the new coach, I won't go.”
"Tonight everything went in the right direction and we did a very good match. You don't start a match thinking to win 4-0, but at the end i think we deserved it coz we played very well."
