Livorno 1-2 Palermo: Sicilians Manage A Nervy Win
Palermo continued to climb up the table with a 2-1 win over Livorno.....
Livorno remain rock bottom after suffering yet another defeat at home, this time to Palermo. Goals from Fabrizio Miccoli and Federico Balzaretti saw the Sicilians win 2-1 and maintain their surge towards the top half of the table.
Livorno started with three at the back and Cristiano Lucarelli and Francesco Tavano starting upfront. Sampdoria lined up in their usual formation with Edinson Cavani and Fabrizio Miccoli in attack and Fabio Simplicio, Mattia Cassani and Javier Pastore supporting them from the midfield.
The game started slowly with the home side trying to dominate possession in the midfield but not quite getting their act together. Soon, Palermo started to make their superior class and technique count as Miccoli and Cavani combined in the seventh minute.
Three minutes later, Cassani and Pastore combined to try and make inroads into the Livorno defence. A minute later, the hosts got a chance when Lucarelli took a shot but it was saved by Palermo custodian Rubinho.
The best chance of the game until then fell to Palermo in the 14th minute when Simon Kjaer couldn't keep his header low off a Miccoli pass.
Six minutes later it was Livorno's turn to get disappointed when Rubinho made a wonderful save from a Nico Pulzetti shot from close range. A couple of minutes later Cristian Raimondi tried his luck from distance but could not keep his shot on target.
Then in the 26th minute Miccoli had a great chance to break the deadlock when he received the ball on the edge of the Livorno penalty area. When trying to beat De Lucia in the Livorno goal, the Italian tried to steer the ball towards the far post and failed to score.
There wasn't any concrete chance after that as both sides tried to hit the other but couldn't do so. Then a couple of minutes before half time Leonardo Miglionico went for a header from a corner but it went just inches wide off the mark.

The second half started slowly but soon picked up momentum with two quick goals, one for each side inside the space of two minutes.
It was Livorno who broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second period when Tomas Danilevicius scored from the edge of the Palermo penalty area after a Livorno attack threw the Palermo backline into disarray and a loose ball fell to the Lithuanian.
A couple of minutes later Walter Zenga's side equalised. Simplicio sent Miccoli through and the 30-year-old shot an accurate shot past Alfonso De Lucia into the Livorno net. It became 1-1.
Livorno came close to launching a genuine attack on the visitors' goal on the hour mark when Antonio Candreva and Pulzetti combined but Rubinho was not fooled between the sticks for Palermo.
Eight minutes later Raimondi whipped in a cross from the right but Lucarelli missed it by a whisker.
The hosts were creating several chances during this spell and came close to scoring the third goal of the match in the 73rd minute when Pulzetti took a well measured cross from distance. But, Rubinho read it well and pulled off an incredible save.
Int he end, it was Palermo who eventually scored and it came in the 81st minute. Cassani was fed by Miccoli on the right, took his time and sent in a cross that Federico Balzaretti fired home at the far post.
The hosts came close late on but could not score their second goal of the match and it finished 2-1 to the Sicilians.
