Brazilian-born striker Amauri is eagerly waiting for his Italian citizenship papers to be processed and has been reassured by the Nazionale boss Marcello Lippi that his place in the 23-man party for next year’s World Cup is safe.
“It is just a matter of time: I am waiting to get a call to retrieve my passport,” the Juventus man admitted to La Nazione newspaper.
“The new law says I have to wait six months, instead of 12. But I hope to have it as soon as possible.
“I can’t wait. All my Italy team-mates are waiting for me. It’s something I really crave for. I would be the happiest man in the world to represent the world champions at the World Cup.
“I have talked to Lippi twice in person. He explained the situation to me. And he said that he will call me up as soon as I become Italian.”
Italy booked their spot in the show-piece event in South Africa last Saturday by drawing 2-2 with Ireland and went on to defeat Cyprus 3-2 in their final qualifier on Wednesday.
