Genoa have announced that midfielder Houssine Kharja will be out of action for six months due to a serious injury he picked up in training.

The former Siena man has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ruling him out of Morocco's final World Cup qualifier.

Morocco can no longer qualify for the World Cup itself, and must beat Gabon in order to qualify for next January's African Cup of Nations.

A statement on Genoa's official website reads:

"Genoa CFC announce that the MRI scan that was performed on the midfielder Houssine Kharja, injured in the penultimate session at the Centro Sportivo Signorini, revealed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee.

"This diagnosis requires surgery in order to repair it. The return to full training is estimated to be in six months."
