Fiorentina and Lazio shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the Franchi yesterday, but Alberto Gilardino was denied what seemed to be a perfectly good goal, as replays showed that Stefan Radu’s goal-line clearance had crossed the line.

And Florence mayor Matteo Renzi slammed Lazio President Claudio Lotito for his alleged behaviour in the wake of the incident.

“When one comes to Florence, and I am referring to Mr Lotito, they must remember that this is a civil land,” Renzi lamented on Radio Blu.

Lotito allegedly yelled that it was not a goal while sitting in the Franchi stands, and Renzi added: “I don’t want to say what happened, but we must censure the behaviour of certain Lazio directors.”

But the fiery Lotito has wasted no time in hitting back.

“The sporting impetus has confused the thoughts of the Florence mayor. If he wants to be a fan and stir up controversy over the result of the match, he can do it by commenting on the encounter," he raged.

“But he is not allowed to speak of a lack of civility from the Lazio directors, as this club is 110-year-old and has brought and brings civility wherever it goes.

“Therefore, the mayor would really make a civil gesture if he apologised to Lazio and its fans.”
