No Oriundi For Italy, Cassano A True Talent - Former Azzurri Boss Azeglio Vicini
Former Italy coach Azeglio Vicini thinks the Azzurri don't need players like Amauri or Thiago Motta, but that Antonio Cassano still has a chance to make the squad.
There is still some controversy in Italy surrounding the so-called 'Oriundi', the non-Italian-born players like Amauri and Thiago Motta who may get themselves in contention for a spot in the Azzurri squad if they get their Italian passports.
Former Italy coach Azeglio Vicini is one of those people who believe the national team can do without these types of players.
"The Oriundi? I think we can do without them," he said to 24oredisport.com. "I'm favorable to the limitation to players with a dual nationality who at 20 years of age choose to play for Italy, but not to those who are 30 and after waiting for ages to be called up by Brazil or Argentina, fall back on Italy."
On attacking talent Antonio Cassano, Vicini said, "He's the most talented player in our football. And like all our world-class players, like [Roberto] Baggio or [Gianni] Rivera for example, he is controversial.
"I still he think he has to improve in his consistency, even though he has already improved a lot, and it's also possible that after Italy have qualified, [Marcello] Lippi will change his mind and call him anyway. Cassano has an entire season to make the coach re-think things."
Vicini coached Italy from 1986 to 1991, leading the team to the semi-finals of Euro 1988 and Italia '90.
