Milan Defender Kakhaber Kaladze: Left-Back Role Is A Stopgap Measure

The Georgian insists his switch to the full-back position will be temporary.

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani revealed on Wednesday that central defender Kakhaber Kaladze has accepted to resume his role at left-back to bolster Leonardo’s options on that side of defence following Marek Jankulovski’s poor start to the season, but the 31-year-old has warned the Rossoneri not to get used to it.

“If it will be necessary, I can play at left-back, but for no more than two or three matches,” he told La Repubblica.

However, this sacrifice could actually work in the player's favour as he seems unlikely to break up new central pair Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva, particularly as he is still short on fitness following knee surgery.

“Yes, I went under the knife in March,” the Georgia international said.

“But I am now ready and the [international] against Italy will be my first match for six and a half months. I am fired up. After that, I will go back to Milanello and compete with Nesta and Thiago Silva.

“I can’t wait to breathe the atmosphere of the Champions League again.”

Georgia currently prop up World Cup qualifying Group 7 and host Marcello Lippi’s Italy in Tbilisi on Saturday night.
