Gay Rights Group Upset With Italy Coach Marcello Lippi

The Azzurri tactician's comments have caused a stir in the peninsula...

A leading gay rights group has taken issue with Italy coach Marcello Lippi, after the former Juventus boss suggested he would not allow any openly gay players to feature for the national team, according to Sports Illustrated.

Lippi told the program KlausCondicio that the situation would create conflict in Italy, as players and matches are dissected to a nearly obsessive extent in the country. He continue by claiming that "even if people understand and accept that situation, it would nevertheless be exploited so much that it would end up negatively".

The group Arcigay believe that the 61-year-old's comments promote prejudice towards the gay community, as they fuel "a climate poisoned by fear and suspicion", especially as Lippi is someone that the younger generation admires.

The situation is of particular significance in Italy at the moment as a number of violent acts have been committed towards homosexuals in Rome. A gay couple was attacked last week, one of them being stabbed, and another incident occurred when vandals tried to burn down a gay nightclub.
