Roma president Rosella Sensi is the latest to defend Francesco Totti from a verbal attack by Nicola Irti, the lawyer of unsuccessful Roma bidder Vinicio Fioranelli, who suggested that the captain was a detriment to the club.

"Dear Francesco, you continue to be part of the history of Rome," began her statement on the club's official website.

"You are not just a sample of Calcio, but an example because of your professionalism and the skills you possess."

She continued to praise the World Cup winner, comparing him to some other heroes from football's past.

"Perhaps only the history of [Alfredo] Di Stefano at Real Madrid can be compared to yours in Rome," said Sensi.

"You are a symbol for our team and for many Romans and I do not offend anyone by saying that - as like [Paolo] Maldini - you are a flag of football that has feelings of passion and love for their team.

"Rome is honoured to have you as a friend."

Totti has been with the Giallorossi his entire career and is the club's all-time top-scorer in Serie A with 178 tallies to his name.
