Legendary Napoli Masseur Salvatore Carmando Retires
The man whom Maradona used to kiss on the forehead in a pre-game ritual has called it quits.
Carmando is an institution at the San Paolo after taking care of the Azzurri players’ muscles for 35 years.
He was expected to call it a day next season but has evidently agreed with the club to bring forward his retirement.
Carmando was close friends with Argentina boss Diego Maradona during his stint in Campania and ‘El Pibe de Oro’ used to kiss his forehead before the start of every match.
Maradona also wanted him by his side at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico where Argentina triumphed after beating West Germany 3-2 in the final.
Carmando’s name is also associated with a renowned incident that was probably crucial in helping Napoli win their second Serie A title in 1990.
Midfielder Alemao was hit by a coin in Bergamo during a match with Atalanta and Carmando was seen clearly urging the Brazilian to stay down and ask to be replaced.
The game ended 0-0 but Napoli were later awarded a 2-0 win by the sporting judge and went on to pip Milan to the Scudetto by only two points.
