Antonio Cassano Needs To Play For Italy - Claudio Gentile

Former Italy Under-21 coach Claudio Gentile thinks Antonio Cassano has matured and would be an essential part of the Italian national team.

For no less than six years he was the manager of Italy's Under-21 side, and during the first 24 months of his tenure, Claudio Gentile had many well-publicised arguments with striker Antonio Cassano. At the time, between 2000 and 2002, he was at the height of his rebelliousness, but his huge talent was already clearly evident.

Gentile believes Cassano has matured now and that Italy's current squad, which was humiliated at the Confederations Cup, need a player of his calibre.

"I won't give [coach Marcello] Lippi advice because he certainly doesn't need it," he said as quoted by Goal.com Italia. "But I do have my opinions. The Confederations Cup clearly said that Italy need to be renewed.

"The first player I think of is Antonio Cassano, with whom I had many problems, as you'll remember, when I coached the Under-21s. But now he has matured as a man and, considering his pure class, can be useful to Lippi's national team."
